Class Real: Mindfuck MoviesStephen Klancher ...has seen 66 ...has seen 119.7 hours ...has not seen 235 hours Timeline - Covers Most Recent: Predestination First Unseen: Arise! SubGenius Recruitment Film #16 (# 2) 1. Avalon (2001) Stephen Klancher: May 30, 2011 This felt like an anime, which I guess makes sense considering the director. Also, I guess this is where the Class Real mindfuck movie list got its name. 4. Adaptation. (2002) Stephen Klancher: March 22, 2009 Very interesting movie with a lot going on. Nice overview navigating the madness here: http://www.thehotbutton.com/today/hot.button/2002_thb/021210_tue.html#adaptation 8. A Scanner Darkly (2006) Releases on 2006-08-18 Stephen Klancher: July 24, 2006 Initially saw this in the theater with my dad and felt a little let down by it. I now think that might have been because I was watching it with him and knowing that he couldn't appreciate it. Sometime later I rewatched the second half of this with another perspective and it was amazing. 18. Blade Runner (1982) Stephen Klancher: SEEN I watched this and only thought it was ok. I found out later that the Director's Cut which I watched was lacking the narration of the original. I often really enjoy narration in movies and might have enjoyed this more if I had a clearer understanding of what was going on in some parts. Maybe someday I'll have to rewatch the original version. 19. The Big Empty (2003) Stephen Klancher: October 18, 2010 That was a very different movie by the end. Also Sean Bean as a cowboy and Kelsey Grammer as an FBI agent were fun roles. 23. Begotten (1990) Stephen Klancher: December 13, 2010 I'm marking this as watched because we watched maybe 10 minutes worth and I think that is enough to get the experience of this hour long film. Reminded me of some of the short films of David Lynch. 28. Black Swan (2010) Releases on 2010-12-17 Stephen Klancher: December 20, 2010 That was crazy amazing. All I knew going in was there was ballet and it was supposed to be good. Totally surprising and totally insane... the qualities I like most in a movie. 32. Casshern (2004) Stephen Klancher: June 25, 2011 I have mixed feelings about this. The style was very cool: they did a pretty good job of creating the feel of live action anime, and the choreography was good. But a lot of points throughout the movie were confusing. I think it is because they were trying to rush through a series worth of story in a movie length of time. Also, the creator of of the Class Real Mindfuck Movies list seems to associate anime influence with mindfuck movies. I would say this was just anime-level weird, and not really mindfuck style. 33. Cypher (2002) Releases on 1969-12-31 Stephen Klancher: February 25, 2012 Pretty fun movie. Though it doesn't seem to be the case the whole way through, there are some parts where framing and lighting of scenes are very artfully thought out. 34. Cube (1997) Stephen Klancher: September 27, 2010 I enjoy when movies tell a whole story within a constrained setting and timeframe. Amusing when Worth goes into his explaination of his small part of the creation of the Cube and why they had to put people in it: "You have to use it, or you admit that it's pointless." 36. The City of Lost Children (1995) Stephen Klancher: July 9, 2011 Crazy movie. Unsurprised to see that it is the same directory as Delicatessen. Dominique Pinon is just as cool in this movie. 50. Donnie Darko (2001) Releases on 1969-12-31 Stephen Klancher: SEEN I remember getting mad because I was watching this at Alyson's house with a group where half of the people were really interested in the movie and the less interested half were making it hard to hear and enjoy it. Regardless it was fun. I always looked for more meaning in it than I was able to find though. But it created a great atmosphere and was a lot of fun to watch. 52. Delicatessen (1991) Releases on 1992-04-03 Stephen Klancher: May 28, 2011 What a weird, fun movie. The rhythm things they did throughout were a nice touch. 59. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) Releases on 1969-12-31 Stephen Klancher: SEEN I love this movie. Would I zap my brain? Probably. Maybe I already did. How would I know? Whatever. I love this movie. 69. Fight Club (1999) Stephen Klancher: SEEN There's so much that is cool about this movie. But mostly the impact of the reveal the first time you watch it. The sort of Sixth-Sense change where you can then rewatch it as an entirely different experience. 81. The Game (1997) Stephen Klancher: July 16, 2009 Fucking awesome movie. I had seen significant portions on tv long ago and this is an unfortunate movie in which to have spoiled surprises. But it was still great to see the whole thing finally. 82. Gattaca (1997) Stephen Klancher: SEEN I saw this with Bob and Garrett in the theater. It's a cool scenario and I like the kind of odd yellow filter used for most scenes. 85. Groundhog Day (1993) Releases on 1969-12-31 Stephen Klancher: SEEN The joke is obvious but it's also the truth: I watched this movie over and over and over. This was one of a handful of movies we rewatched frequently growing up at my dad's house. I love Bill Murray and I love this movie. 97. Ink (2009) Releases on 1969-12-31 Stephen Klancher: October 4, 2010 Individual aspects of this movie and certain scenes and lines were awesome. But the parts only added up to a so-so whole. Worth seeing for some of the visuals, but I felt a bit let down by how it all came together. 100. Inception (2010) Releases on 2010-07-16 Stephen Klancher: July 17, 2010 Dreams within dreams... there was never a chance I wouldn't like this movie. It was incredibly fun. 109. Johnny Got His Gun (1971) Stephen Klancher: September 12, 2010 This is the movie which the Metallica song One is based on and the source of the scenes in that music video. It is completely horrifying. 119. Mulholland Dr. (2001) 120. Memento (2000) Releases on 2000-10-11 Stephen Klancher: SEEN Showing events out of chronological order can range from confusing to really cool. Memento used it in a gimmicky way, but it turned out great. 127. Moon (2009) Releases on 2009-07-10 Stephen Klancher: August 8, 2010 Pretty cool, although I feel like once the viewer understands what is going on there wasn't much in the way of twists or surprises. Still fun to watch though. 129. The Ninth Gate (1999) Stephen Klancher: August 5, 2009 Well created dark atmosphere and character in this. Doesn't hurt that I like Johnny Depp. I watched about half of this three years ago and now finally watched it in full. I was disappointed by what felt like to me like an abrupt ending, but it was still cool. I thought I remembered more being revealed about the girl before the end of the movie. 138. Oldboy (2003) Releases on 1969-12-31 Stephen Klancher: SEEN This was a pretty mindfuck movie when I first saw it. I'd still like to watch the sequel/prequel at some point. 144. Paprika (2006) Releases on 2006-11-25 Stephen Klancher: January 31, 2011 What a trip that was! Dream blending and madness... Also I always forget how much animation benefits from high res and no compression artifacts. Very pretty. 146. Persona (1967) Releases on 1967-03-16 Stephen Klancher: December 13, 2010 Interesting scenes, especially the mid point when the film tears and burns suddenly. I knew what I was getting into once I saw who directed it, but I probably should have cautioned other people in the room that they might not enjoy it. At least one person said it was awful. 147. The Prestige (2006) Stephen Klancher: SEEN I liked this a lot. Although I seem to remember that something about it lead to an argument. Whatever, very fun. 155. Requiem for a Dream (2000) Stephen Klancher: SEEN I love the theme music (Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna"). But man, remembering this movie just makes me think "life is terrible." 159. Se7en (1995) Stephen Klancher: SEEN This movie did not strike me as much as most people I guess. Am I too desensitized? I just seem to remember Brad Pitt swearing a lot. 160. The Sixth Sense (1999) Stephen Klancher: SEEN Probably spoiled for anyone who didn't see it soon after it came out, but a well done twist made this fun. Plus there's the iconic "I see dead people" line. 162. Stay (2005) Stephen Klancher: October 25, 2010 Now that was a real mindfuck. It put me in a tripped out state of mind the likes of which few movies have created. 169. The Science of Sleep (2006) Releases on 2006-08-16 Stephen Klancher: December 2, 2011 Fantastic movie! The dreams were outrageous and the blending into reality was engrossing. 175. Shutter Island (2010) Stephen Klancher: February 27, 2010 A lot of elements were over dramatized, like how the music in the beginning sounded like it should be at the climax of a movie... but I really enjoyed it. Later in the movie the sudden music went well with jarring scenes. Fun all around. 177. Synecdoche, New York (2008) Stephen Klancher: September 7, 2009 Wow, that was really cool. I'll probably need to watch that again some time to be able to follow more of it, but I really enjoy that kind of almost dreamy uncertain continuity. Eternal Sunshine probably still my favorite, but I really enjoy these movies written by Kaufman. 180. Sucker Punch (2011) Stephen Klancher: March 25, 2011 Awesome, but I was the only one who thought so. It's interesting because this accomplishes the same thing as the movie 300: focus on visuals, little on characters or plot. But I like this way more and other people seem to like it less. The thing is, if it isn't going to have a solid story, I want it to be outrageous. That's why I'm not drawn to most action movies: the stories are often very generic, but then the action also tends to fall into the same categories you'll see in any "realistic" movie... car chase, shootout, hero jumping away from explosion. Even a lot of sci-fi movies don't stray too far with the action. I want something crazier. This was like a live action anime, Inception styled world, where they fight samurai, steampunk Nazi zombies, robots, goblins, and dragons, and is shot as a constant music video. The one part I did get agreement on was that it had good music, so that aspect worked pretty well. 181. Source Code (2011) Releases on 2011-04-01 185. The Thirteenth Floor (1999) Stephen Klancher: November 15, 2008 Brett told me about this movie not long after we met, but it took us five years to get around to watching it. Better late than never. And omg wireframe! 186. Twelve Monkeys (1995) Stephen Klancher: April 25, 2009 That was excellent. Brad Pitt is amazing as a crazy man and I always love Bruce Willis. Everything about the future scenes was so Terry Gilliam, although I was surprised to see no midgets. Time travel and insane prognostications blurring the lines between hallucinations and reality? Yes please. Also, the creepy distorted "Merry Christmas!" at the end of her message was sampled in a very spooky sounding remix of Mario 64 haunted house music. I never knew what it was from until now, but I have always thought it was one of the most creepy distortions possible. 187. Total Recall (1990) Stephen Klancher: April 5, 2010 This is an awesome movie. I had seen most of it before but bit by bit on tv. Finally watched it all together and liked it even more. See you at the party Richter! 197. The Truman Show (1998) Stephen Klancher: SEEN I loved this movie. The only problem was it gave me a more specific scenario for my general paranoia to latch on to. Clearly my life is full of people behind the scenes watching and manipulating my life. If I tune my radio just right I might be able to hear their radio chatter... 210. Wild at Heart (1990) Stephen Klancher: April 26, 2009 "This whole world's wild at heart and weird on top." Seems like an appropriate titular line. 216. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Stephen Klancher: SEEN I think I watched parts of this in my Physics class in high school, then came home and watched the rest. I think there was no justification other than that Mr Loritz just wanted to watch the movie. |
